What this library covers

This is a library of guides on UK healthcare and social work regulation, written for registrants who are facing a concern, a complaint or a fitness to practice investigation.

The guides explain how each regulator’s process actually works, stage by stage: what a first letter means, who decides, what happens at case examiner level, what a hearing involves, and what the available outcomes are. They also set out what insight, reflection and remediation mean in practice, and what kind of evidence carries weight.

Questions about these guides

Which guide should I read first?

Start with the one that names your regulator and your stage. If you have just received a letter, the investigation letter guide for your regulator is the place to begin. If a stage has already been reached — case examiners, an interim order, a hearing listed — read the guide for that stage, because what is useful to do changes as a case moves.

Do the guides cover my regulator?

They cover the GMC, NMC, GDC, GPhC, HCPC, GOC, GCC, GOsC and the social work regulators. Use the filter buttons above the list to see only the guides for yours. Some guides are written across regulators, because insight, reflection, remediation and probity are assessed in much the same way whichever body is asking.

Are they free to read?

Yes. Every guide on this page is free and needs no account. Our courses are paid, and the guides link to them where relevant, but the guides are complete in themselves.

How often are new guides added?

New guides are published regularly as regulatory guidance changes and as new questions come up from the professionals we work with. This page lists everything currently published, and updates itself as articles are added.

Can I share a guide with a colleague or my solicitor?

Yes. Please do. Each guide has its own address, so it can be linked or sent on. Several are written specifically to be read alongside a defence organisation or a solicitor rather than instead of one.

Reading is not remediation
